HC Deb 14 December 1989 vol 163 cc797-8W
Mr. Ron Davies

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food whether any decisions have been taken by the Council of Ministers in the post-1992 control of foot and mouth disease, classical and African swine fever and rabies; and if he will list the incidence of each of these diseases in each member state.

Mr. Maclean

Community measures, agreed by the Council, are already in place for the control or eradication of these diseases but no decisions have been taken on measures to apply after 1992.

The number of outbreaks reported in member states in the last five years are as follows:

(2) whether veterinary investigation officers who are used to investigate salmonella outbreaks in poultry flocks are required to be confirmed non-carriers of salmonella.

Mr. Maclean

My veterinary officers, who carry out investigations into cases of possible salmonella infection in poultry flocks, are not routinely checked to see if they are carriers of the disease nor are they required to be confirmed non-carriers of salmonella. Strict measures are taken to ensure proper hygiene and disinfection when veterinary officers visit farms.
