HC Deb 13 December 1989 vol 163 cc706-7W
24. Mr. Wigley

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what steps have been taken by his Department in conjunction with others to monitor the level of pollution in the Irish sea.

Mr. Heathcoat-Amory

Regular monitoring for a wide range of purposes and substances takes place in the Irish sea, undertaken mainly by the National Rivers Authority in the case of rivers and estuaries and the Fisheries Departments for offshore site. The Department of the Environment also contributes, as does the work of dedicated research agencies such as the Natural Environment Research Council.
