HC Deb 13 December 1989 vol 163 cc686-7W
Miss Emma Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how many persons have been decorated with the bronze or silver medal for gallantry for saving life at sea in each year since 1974.

Mr. McLoughlin

There have been two awards of the sea gallantry medal (bronze) in the period: one in 1981 and the other in 1989. No sea gallantry medals (silver) were awarded.

Miss Emma Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what steps his Department has taken to alert master mariners, shipping companies, the lifeboat services, Her Majesty's Coastguard and other official institutions to the sea gallantry medal instituted by Act of Parliament to recognise acts of bravery at sea.

Mr. McLoughlin

The Department has not thought it necessary to publicise the award in view of its long standing.
