HC Deb 13 December 1989 vol 163 c721W
73. Mr. Matthew Taylor

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what advice his Department provides to those concerned about the quality of their drinking water.

Mr. Howard

The Water Act 1989 and regulations made under it clarify and strengthen the requirements for drinking water quality. In addition to the local authorities' continuing role of checking the quality of water supplies, the new drinking water inspectorate will seek to ensure that drinking water standards are met. Also, it is now a criminal offence for water undertakers to supply water which is unfit for human consumption.
