Mr. Blunkett

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many market research and sample surveys were carried out by or for his Department in the past 12 months; what was the cost of each; what was the total cost; how many were carried out in-house; how many were carried out for his Department by outside organisations; and what percentage of the total expenditure was paid to outside organisations.

A total of 25 market research and sample surveys were completed during the last 12 months. The surveys are listed in the table along with the cost:

Eighteen of these surveys were carried out by outside organisations and data on two surveys carried out in house was processed by outside organisations; 90 per cent. of the total expenditure was paid to outside organisations (which included other Government Departments such as the Office of Population Censuses and Surveys).
