Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food how many applications for new pesticides he has(a) received and (b) approved, for each year since 1985; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

Applications for pesticide registration (including renewals) received and approved by my Department were as follows:

Year Received Approved
1985 n/a n/a
1986 n/a n/a
1987 1,102 544
1988 (including off-labels) 1,363 1,068
1989 (as at 1 December 1989) (including off-labels) 1,718 906

n/a = not available.

Dr. David Clark

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food which pesticides currently approved were approved(a) before 1961, (b) between 1961 and 1970, (c) between 1971 and 1980 and (d) between 1981 and the present day; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maclean

Approved pesticides are listed in "Pesticides 1989" a copy of which is available in the Library of the House. Those active ingredients approved prior to 31 December 1980 are listed as follows and those approved prior to 31 December 1965 are marked with an asterisk.
