To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland in how many travel-to-work areas in Scotland the level of unemployment is higher than the British national average; and what is his estimate of current unemployment in the City of Glasgow.

There were 40 Scottish travel-to-work areas in October 1989 (the latest available date) which had a work force unemployment rate greater than the equivalent Great Britain rate.

There were 52,352 persons unemployed in Glasgow city local authority area in October 1989.
