HC Deb 11 December 1989 vol 163 c475W
Sir Hector Monro

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applicants have handed in firearms for compensation under the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988; how many weapons this covers; and how many applicants have been(a) paid and (b) refused.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

A total of 2,896 applications in England and Wales have been submitted claims, in respect of 3,548 weapons, surrendered to the police or otherwise disposed of, for a payment under the Government buy-in scheme for weapons newly prohibited under the Firearms (Amendment) Act 1988.

Of these applicants, 2,690 have had payments authorised and 71 have been refused as ineligible under the scheme; 135 claims have yet to be resolved.
