§ Mr. PaiceTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what steps are being taken to reduce the incidence of the LD50 test on animals in research laboratories; and if he will make it his policy that no further licences be issued.
§ Mr. Peter LloydWe welcome the initiative by British scientists in the European Community and the OECD to reduce the need for this test for the classification of substances. We have no plans to refuse licences where my right hon. and learned Friend is satisfied that the work is justified under section 5 of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986.
