§ Mr. Andrew WelshTo ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what checks or monitoring his Department does for radiation level in food imports from eastern European countries since the accident at Chernobyl; and if he will make a statement.
§ Lord James Douglas-HamiltonResponsibility for checking food imports rests under the Imported Food160W (Scotland) Regulations 1985 with district and islands councils. EC regulation 3955/87 currently sets down the maximum permissible levels of radioactivity in imported foods. My Department has received no reports of these levels being exceeded.
