To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will make a statement on the 70 mph speed limit.

Mr. Atkins

The representations I get are divided between setting lower speed limits and setting higher ones. I see no reason to change the present 70 mph on motorways and high speed roads.

Mr. Fearn

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he has any plans to alter the maximum speed limit on motorways and other non-residential roads.

Mr. Atkins

I have no such plans. The representations I get are divided between setting lower speed limits and setting higher ones. I see no reason to change the present limits on motorways and other non-residential roads.
