HC Deb 04 December 1989 vol 163 c2W
Mr. Vaz

To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry if he will make a statement regarding the present state of the British footwear industry.

Mr. Douglas Hogg

My Department is fully aware of the difficulties facing United Kingdom footwear manufacturers and of their continuing concern over low-cost imports, particularly from the Far East. The findings and recommendations of the Commission's Community-wide investigation into imports of footwear from Taiwan and South Korea have been circulated to member states. Those recommendations are now being urgently examined and we will reach a decision on appropriate action for the United Kingdom as soon as possible.
