To ask the Secretary of State for Transport by how much investment in London commuter services will increase over the next three years.

Mr. Portillo

London Regional Transport and BR's Network SouthEast plan to invest about £3.4 billion over the next three years (including £0.5 billion for the Jubilee line extension). That is £1.6 billion more than in the three years to April 1990, an increase of nearly 70 per cent. in real terms. Most of that investment will benefit services used by commuters.
