§ The Attorney-GeneralDuring 1988 the number of defendants proceeded against in magistrates courts was 1,863,000. In the Crown court 104,773 trials, 12,695 cases for sentence and 15,849 appeals from magistrates courts were disposed of. The Court of Appeal Criminal Division dealt with 8,001 applications and appeals.
