HC Deb 24 April 1989 vol 151 c454W
62. Mr. Holt

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what action he intends to take to alleviate the present situation of drivers being stuck in road jams of (i) 26 miles and (ii) over 30 miles.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

We need more road capacity and roads which last longer, drivers who cause fewer crashes and better information systems to warn of incidents and congestion. Action is being taken in each case.

63. Mr. Hardy

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what is his estimate of the cost to the economy of delays and congestion on the roads of Britain during 1988.

Mr. Peter Bottomley

I refer the hon. Member to the reply which I gave earlier today to my hon. Friend the Member for Beverley (Mr. Cran).
