To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what was the level of public expenditure on roads and motoring during the last year for which information is available.

Gross public expenditure on roads and activities related to motor vehicles and motoring in Great Britain in 1988–89 is presently forecast to be £4,450 million. This figure does not include police expenditure on traffic regulation.
