HC Deb 24 April 1989 vol 151 c415W
Mr. Alton

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment how many of his Department's staff are responsible for monitoring pollution control in the Mersey.

Mr. Moynihan

[holding answer 20 April 1989]: Responsibility for controlling and monitoring water quality and pollution in the River Mersey rests with the North West water authority. The Department, through Her Majesty's Inspectorate of Pollution, is responsible for the control of discharges by the North West water authority itself and had one full-time principal water inspector plus support staff engaged on this task.
