To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what Government financial assistance has been allocated to county road building and improvement programmes for 1988–89 and for 1989–90.

The 108 local highway authorities in England were given a total capital allocation of £567.111 million for capital expenditure in 1988–89 on road building and improvements. Of this £191 million was provided by way of transport supplementary grant towards the cost of schemes of more than local importance. The corresponding figures for 1989–90 are £513 million and £204 million respectively.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what Government financial assistance has been allocated to East Sussex's road building and improvement programme for 1988–89 and for 1989–90.

East Sussex county council was given a capital allocation of £7.180 million for expenditure on road building and improvements in 1988–89. Of this £2.121 million was provided by way of transport supplementary grant towards the cost of schemes of more than local importance. The corresponding figures for 1989–90 are £6.720 million and £2.482 million respectively.
