To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how much launch aid for civil aerospace programmes was provided by his Department in 1988; and how much has been committed for 1989.

For the calendar year 1988, £63 million was provided to British Aerospace in connection with the development of the Airbus A330/A340 programme and £10.3 million to Westland Helicopters in connection with the EH101. For the financial year 1988–89 the total figures were respectively £88.5 million and £9.9 million. For the financial year 1989–90 up to £154 million will be available to BAe and £12 million to Westland. The A330/340 and the EH101 are the only programmes currently receiving launch aid from the Department.
