To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what proportion of social security benefit expenditure in 1988–89 was devoted to unemployed people; and what were the comparable figures for the previous two years.

The latest estimate is that benefits for unemployed people were about 12 per cent. of total social security benefit expenditure in 1988£89, compared with over 16 per cent. in 1986–87 and about 14 per cent. in 1987–88.
