To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what proportion of pensioners were in the lowest fifth of the national income distribution in the last year for which figures are available; and what was the comparable figure for 1979.

In 1979, 38 per cent. of pensioners tax units1 were in the lowest fifth of the national income distribution. By 1986 this figure had fallen to 24 per cent.
