To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster what is his policy on references to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Maude

The Government's policy on references to the Monopolies and Mergers Commission is stated in a DTI Blue Paper entitled "Mergers Policy", published in March 1988. The main consideration in considering whether to refer a merger to the MMC is the potential effect on competition in the United Kingdom.
