HC Deb 13 April 1989 vol 150 c645W
Mrs. Mahon

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport why, in British Rail's provincial sector, many life-expired three-car trains are being replaced by two-car units.

Mr. Portillo

Investment in modern two-car units offering an improved level of service has been approved as the most cost-effective way of replacing old diesel multiple units. Earlier this year I approved a further 194 express vehicles for provincial services.
