Mr. David Nicholson

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will detail the United Kingdom aid provided to the Sudan in 1988–89, under the following headings(a) food, (b) medical supplies, (c) transport and (d) water supplies-equipment; and if he will give the amounts provided by the United Kingdom for the provinces of Equatoria, Bahr Ghazal and Upper Nile.

Final expenditure figures for 1988–89 are not yet available. Provisional figures for Britain's emergency and relief aid to Sudan include the following:

  1. (a) Food: £6.908 million (including the United Kingdom share of European Community food aid).
  2. (b) Medical supplies: £0.173 million.
  3. (c) Transport: £0.169 million.
  4. (d) Water supplies-equipment: £0.040 million.

Of these, about £4.5 million was for the southern provinces of Equatoria, Bahr el Ghazal and upper Nile. Figures for the individual provinces are not available.

Miss Lestor

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will list British contributions to the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference for each year since its foundation.

Since the Southern African Development Co-ordination Conference was founded, the United Kingdom has committed the following amounts:

  • £10 million in 1980–81
  • £2 million in 1982–83
  • £13 million in 1985–86
  • £10 million in 1986.87
  • £10 million in 1987.88
  • £15 million in 1988.89

Expenditure is recorded within the figures for the country where individual projects are based.

In addition to emergency and relief aid, our programme of long-term development assistance and programme aid included:

  1. (a) Food production: £1.2 million.
  2. (b) Medical supplies: £2.3 million.
  3. (c) Transport: £2.7 million.
  4. (d) Water supplies-equipment: £2.0 million.
