HC Deb 13 April 1989 vol 150 c621W
Sir Ian Gilmour

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether unmarried couples who are living together and are treated for Department of Social Security purposes like married couples will be able to claim married couple's income tax allowance after April 1990.

Mr. Lawson

[holding answer 11 April 1989]: No. The married couple's allowance will be given only if the couple are both married and living together. As at present, however, an unmarried couple looking after one or more children will be able to claim an additional personal allowance between them. The additional personal allowance will be equal in amount to the married couple's allowance.
