HC Deb 12 April 1989 vol 150 c578W
Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what will be the cost of bringing beaches in Yorkshire up to European Economic Community standards; and from what date he is expects the standards to be met.

Mr. Howard

The costs and completion date of capital works currently planned by Yorkshire water authority for improving bathing waters are set out below:

Water Cost £ million Completion
Robin Hood's Bay 1.3 Spring 1993
Scarborough (North and South Bays) 26.2 Summer 1991
Flamborough South Landing 1.0 Spring 1992
Withernsea 3.8 Spring 1992

Only one of these waters—that at Flamborough south landing—failed to comply with EEC standards in 1988. However, it is expected that all Yorkshire Water bathing waters will reliably meet those standards once the improvement works have been completed.
