§ Mr. LeightonTo ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department what are the criteria by which London boroughs are selected for the safer cities programme.
§ Mr. John PattenThe criteria used to select safer cities initiatives are that an area must (i) be an urban programme area; (ii) have a high crime rate; (iii) be targeted for Government action and (iv) be willing to participate in the safer cities programme. These criteria apply to all areas selected for inclusion in the programme including the London boroughs.
