[holding answer 4 April 1989]: My Department's expenditure on consultants employed to improve the efficiency of the Department in the financial year 1988–89 is estimated to be £6,749,000, of which £3,612,000 is for computer consultancy contracts excluding hardware and software purchases. Expenditure on management consultants is not recorded separately from other consultancy spend.
