§ 51. Mr. Simon HughesTo ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer by how much the average monthly mortgage repayment increased between March 1988 and March 1989.
§ Mr. Norman LamontIt is not possible to make a direct comparison because of the variety of mortgages, some of which involve payments of interest and endowment premiums and others include repayments of capital as well as interest. But the additional interest payable on the average sized mortgage of £22,000 is about £50 per month. The increase is less in those cases where the repayment period has been extended or part of the interest has been deferred.
