§ Mr. RedmondTo ask the Secretary of State for Energy, pursuant to his reply of 13 February,Official Report, column 40, what analysis has been made of the report, "Greenhouse Warming: A Rationale for Nuclear Power"; what action he proposes to take as a result; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mr. Michael SpicerThe paper "Greenhouse Warming: Comparative Analysis of Two Abatement Strategies" has been examined by my Department. The paper is United States oriented. The scope for cost-effective energy efficiency measures and the means by which they might be implemented are not sufficiently addressed.
Nuclear power has a positive role to play in helping to curtail future CO2 emissions, but is not going to solve the threat of global warming on its own. Cost-effective energy efficiency measures will also have an important role and the Energy Efficiency Office will continue to promote them vigorously.
