To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what steps his Department is taking to assist schools in securing a more orderly atmosphere in the classroom.

My Department is currently taking action on a number of key recommendations made in the recent report from the committee of inquiry into discipline in schools. This includes measures to improve teacher training; financial support for projects to tackle the problems of difficult pupils and truancy; and close monitoring of the procedures for excluding pupils from school.
