Lord Mulley

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether, in considering British Rail's proposals for new links between London and the Channel Tunnel, they will request proposals to improve rail links between the north of England, Wales and Scotland and the tunnel.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

British Rail are required by Section 40 of the Channel Tunnel Act to report by the end of this year on their plans for Channel Tunnel passenger and freight services. This report will address the adequacy of existing rail links to the various parts of the country.
