§ Mr. EggarFuture constitutional arrangements in Fiji are for the people of Fiji to resolve among themselves, free from external intervention. We have however made clear to the Government of Fiji on a number of occasions our earnest hope that a new constitution will be acceptable to all communities in Fiji. We will continue to offer advice and assistance in a spirit of friendship and without conditions.
§ Mr. Austin MitchellTo ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what help and advice was provided by Her Majesty's Government in the drawing up of the new Fijian constitution of 22 September; and what representations Her Majesty's Government made to the Government of Fiji on the communalisation of Fiji proposed in that constitution.
§ Mr. EggarMy right hon. Friend the Prime Minister discussed with the Fiji Prime Minister when she met him on 29 March possible options open to Fiji in its search for new constitutional arrangements. My right hon. Friend also offered Fiji advice on the preparation of a new constitution.
The Government of Fiji have since asked for a legal draftsman to assist with framing a new constitution in proper legal language, but we understand that the Fiji Government are unlikely to require the services of the candidate we have offered before March 1989.
We have made no representations to the Government of Fiji on the contents of the draft constitution. We have however consistently expressed the hope that the new constitution will prove acceptable to all communities in Fiji.
