HC Deb 31 October 1988 vol 139 cc535-6W
Mr. Boyes

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he intends to produce a review of work undertaken as part of the Mersey basin campaign, subsidised by his Department.

Mr. Moynihan

The 25-year, £4 billion campaign to clean up the whole of the Mersey basin is one of the Secretary of State for the Environment's most important initiatives. He supports it in a variety of ways, but does not subsidise it within the normal meaning of that word. He keeps the campaign under constant review and makes announcements about its progress from time to time. In August 1987, for instance, a review report was issued which highlighted the achievements of the campaign to date—with a total investment of £425 million over its first three years. I am sending the hon. Gentleman a copy of that report.
