HC Deb 31 October 1988 vol 139 cc542-3W
10. Mr. Roy Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what are the latest unadjusted figures for unemployment in(a) Newport, (b) Gwent and (c) Wales; and if he will give the equivalent figures for 1979 on the most nearly comparable basis.

Mr. Peter Walker

On 8 September 1988 the number of unemployed claimants in Newport district, Gwent and Wales were 6,815, 20,394 and 125,825 respectively. Unadjusted figures for 1979 are not available on a basis that enables a valid comparison to be made.

Mr. Coleman

To ask the Secretary of State for Wales what was the number of people unemployed in(a) Wales, (b) Neath and (c) west Glamorgan in each of the quarters in 1988.

Mr. Peter Walker

On 10 March 1988 there were 141,403 unemployed claimants in Wales; 3,331 in Neath district; and 18,944 in west Glamorgan. On 9 June 1988 the respective figures were 127,116; 2,964 and 17,428; and on 8 September 1988, 125,825; 2,864; and 17,360. Figures for the last quarter of 1988 will be published on 19 January 1989.
