Mr. Atkinson

To ask the Prime Minister, pursuant to her reply to the hon. Member for Cardiff, West (Mr. Morgan) of 24 October, whether industrial action was taking place at Government Communications Headquarters during the weeks immediately preceding 26 December 1979 and on that date; and if she will make a statement.

The Prime Minister

A rolling strike involving the loss of 371 man days took place over the period 19 December 1979 to 13 February 1980. This strike hindered GCHQ's operations during the period of the Russian invasion of Afghanistan, although there was not a total stoppage.
