§ Mrs. RumboldNeither I nor my right hon. Friend have met representatives of the Institute of Foreign Language Teachers. My Department however plans to undertake a review of the terms and conditions of foreign language assistant appointments, in consultation with the Central Bureau for Educational Visits and Exchanges and the local authority associations.
§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what plans he has to increase the recruitment of foreign language assistants in maintained schools in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. RumboldResponsibility for the recruitment of foreign language assistants in maintained schools lies with local education authorities. The Government accord a 467W high priority to extending the study of modern languages in schools and attach value to the contribution such assistants can make. I hope that these appointments will be given their due priority by authorities.
§ Mr. FatchettTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is the current salary scale in force for foreign language assistants in England and Wales; and if he will make a statement.
§ Mrs. RumboldThe allowance currently paid to foreign language assistants is £3,212. The level is set by my Department and is uprated annually in line with the increase in the level of mandatory students' awards.
