Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs if he will make a statement on Her Majesty's Government's policy on developing the contribution of the smaller member states of the European Community to Community decision making.

Mrs. Chalker

The treaties establishing the European Communities provide for all member states to contribute on an equitable basis to Community decision-making.

Mr. Salmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what is his assessment of the role played by the smaller member states of the European Community in the major issues that affect the Community.

Mrs. Chalker

All member states, irrespective of their size, play an important role in the process of development of the Community.
