HC Deb 31 October 1988 vol 139 cc487-8W
Mr. John Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if his Department will initiate a public information campaign to inform women of any rights they may have in regard to any injuries caused by the Dalkon shield contraceptive device.

Mrs. Currie

The available information is given in the table. However, the waiting list figures are generally at a seasonal peak at 31 December. The March and September figures give a better indication of annual trends in the demand for hospital in-patient treatment.

Mrs. Currie

No. The Dalkon shield contraceptive device, which was manufactured in the United States, is currently the subject of compensation litigation in the United States courts. I understand that those courts directed the manufacturer to publicise the procedures and the court subsequently expressed satisfaction with the way the company complied.
