HC Deb 28 October 1988 vol 139 cc427-8W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if he will make a statement on the implications for departmental research resources currently allocated to ozone layer and chlorofluorocarbons research of the report of the United Kingdom stratospheric ozone review group, published on 4 October.

Mrs. Virginia Bottomley

[holding answer 25 October 1988]: The Department of the Environment plans to continue to fund research at least at the current level covering all the areas of work discussed by the stratospheric ozone review group. The Department funds research primarily to provide scientific advice on policy matters. The funding of basic research is more properly the role of NERC and SERC as mentioned in the group's second report.
