HC Deb 28 October 1988 vol 139 c428W
Mr. Michael Brown

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether he has reached any conclusions about the membership of the Sports Council.

Mr. Moynihan

[pursuant to his reply, 1 July 1988, c. 388]: On 1 July I announced our intention to reduce the size of the Sports Council in order to provide a leaner, more efficient and responsive organisation; and at the same time to make a number of new appointments. I am delighted to announce that from today the following are to become members of the Council:

  • Richard Fox
  • Margaret Hohmann
  • Norman Jacobs
  • Tim Marshall
  • Mary Peters
  • David Simon
  • Peter Yarranton

These seven appointments bring the membership of the Sports Council to 14. We believe that a smaller council will be able to respond more quickly and flexibly to the changing demands and expectations in sport. It will also bring its size into line with many other non-departmental public bodies. We are confident that our new appointments from today's sportsmen and women, disabled sport, governing bodies and the private sector will bring invaluable experience to enable them to play a full role on preparing British sport and recreation for the 1990s.
