HC Deb 27 October 1988 vol 139 cc361-2W
80. Mr. Stuart Holland

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer whether he will make a statement on the action taken by Her Majesty's Government in the light of the September meetings of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

Mr. Lilley

At the Berlin meetings, Finance Ministers of the main industrialised countries renewed their commitment to policies leading to sustained growth, low inflation and exchange rate stability.

The meetings welcomed the agreement reached by the Paris Club to implement proposals which my right hon. Friend the Chancellor of the Exchequer first made in April 1987 to provide substantial relief on the official debts of some of the poorest and most heavily indebted countries in Africa which are following approved adjustment programmes. The United Kingdom will play its part in these reschedulings, the first of which is due to be discussed this month.
