To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what is his policy towards his departmental witnesses at the Hinckley Point C public inquiry answering questions on the merits of departmental policy.

Witnesses from my Department appearing at the Hinkley Point C public inquiry will present factual evidence on matters for which MAFF either has statutory responsibility or appropriate expertise. They will assist the inquiry by explaining departmental policy but will not expect to answer any question which, in the opinion of the inspector, is directed to the merits of that policy. This is in accordance with rules 12(3) of the inquiries procedures rules 1987.
