Mr. John Evans

To ask the Secretary of State for Health what information he has on the rate of heart disease in(a) the north-west and (b) the south-east regions.

The table gives the direct age-standardised mortality rates for ischaemic heart disease for the north-west and south-east standard regions for 1982 to 1987. These rates have been adjusted to take account of the differences in the age distributions between areas, and permit direct comparisons to be made.

North-west and south-east standard regions are not precisely conterminous with health authority areas, being based on local authority boundaries; they correspond with health authority areas as follows:

North-west standard region

This consists of the following health authorities: Mersey regional health authority

and North-western regional health authority, with the exception of part of Tameside and Glossop district health authority, which is in East Midlands standard region.

South-east standard region

This consists of:

  • North West Thames regional health authority
  • North East Thames regional health authority
  • South West Thames regional health authority
  • South East Thames regional health authority

and the following districts within Oxford regional health authority:

  • Basingstoke and North Hampshire
  • Isle of Wight
  • Portsmouth and South East Hampshire
  • Southampton and South West Hampshire
  • Winchester

plus part of Salisbury district health authority together with the following districts within Wessex regional health authority:

  • Aylesbury Vale
  • East Berkshire
  • West Berkshire
  • Milton Keynes
  • Oxfordshire
  • Wycombe
