HC Deb 27 October 1988 vol 139 cc381-3W
Mr. Strang

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment why the Health and Safety Executive's technology division has not completed the task of inspecting and certifying fire precautions at the United Kingdom's 1,500 most potentially dangerous work places; and whether he has set a new target date for completion.

Mr. Nicholls

The Health and Safety Executive has issued over 600 fire certificates and has completed the survey work at another 35 premises. The majority of those remaining will already have fire certificates issued under the Factories Act 1961, or the Fire Precautions Act 1971 which remain valid until superseded by a certificate issued under the Fire Certification (Special Premises) Regulations 1976. Priority has been given to those premises having no certificate.

Additional specialist inspectors have been trained this year with the aim of largely completing this work by 1991.
