Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what was the outcome of the investigation into the nuclear fuel canister at the Drigg dump site; what response he intends to make to the investigation report; and when his Department first learned from British Nuclear Fuels plc., about the canister.

[holding answer 26 October]: The canister was unearthed on 12 July. British Nuclear Fuels informed both Her Majesty's inspectorate of pollution and the nuclear installations inspectorate the same day. A detailed investigation was undertaken by the inspectorates and completed by 28 July. A report is being finalised for submission to my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State for Energy.
