To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will publish in theOfficial Report the number of months and weeks that the A2 between the Black Prince, Bexley and Swanscombe Cutting has been under roadworks from 1 January 1984 to date; and if he will make a statement.

We have had a substantial programme of maintenance and improvement for this section of the A2. Major works, consisting of maintenance, replacement of safety fences and construction of hard shoulders, have taken 70 weeks in total since 1 January 1984. There are no records of the timing of minor maintenance.

Major works were carried out over the following periods:

  • May 1986-October 1986 (23 weeks)—replacement of safety fences
  • March 1987-July 1987 (19 weeks)—major maintenance
  • October 1987-January 1988 (16 weeks)—major maintenance
  • August 1988-To date (12 weeks)—construction of hard shoulders

In addition, this section of the A2 is subject to regular patching.
