HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 c244W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy what information he possesses, and what assessment he has made of its relevance for the United Kingdom nuclear energy programme, concerning the discovery of microorganisms in the degraded core of the Three Mile Island II nuclear reactor.

Mr. Michael Spicer

Micro-organism growth in stagnant water is a well-known phenomenon. The example of micro-organisms in the degraded core of Three Mile Island II reactor (TMI) is of interest in relation to long-term severe acccident management and clean-up. The United Kingdom is kept up to date on this and other aspects of TMI through information exchange agreements with the United States of America.
