To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, pursuant to the reply to the hon. Member for Meirionnydd Nant Conwy,Official Report, column 247, 27 July, on radioactive materials transit, what policy considerations underlay the decision to require the central record keeping of nuclear materials lost in transit since 1987.

Central recording of radioactive materials lost in transit was introduced as part of a general improvement of the controls exercised by the Government in this area.
