HC Deb 26 October 1988 vol 139 c291W
41. Mr. Squire

To ask the Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster how many overseas companies have set up operations in Britain; and what is his estimate of how many jobs such overseas investment has created and is sustaining.

Mr. Alan Clark

Since my Department's Invest in Britain bureau started formally recording individual investment projects in 1979, there have been 2,434. These include the establishment of a new business, the expansion or acquisition of an existing business, and involvement in joint venture. Altogether, from the information provided by the companies themselves, these have been responsible for the creation of nearly 160,000 jobs and, since 1983, are known to have safeguarded some 95,000 others.
